Ophelia Marie Horton was born in Freeport, Illinois. The community in which she grew up consisted of an extended family of aunts, cousins, and all types of neighbors who mostly worked for the Illinois Central Railroad. She was born on Madison Street, and moved back and forth during her lifetime at least four times.
Most of her relatives and neighbors excluding her father worked for the railroad. She truly believes we are the sum of our life experiences.
