The mission of the Stephenson County Historical Society, in partnership with the Freeport Park District, is to preserve, present, and promote local and regional history. This is achieved by maintaining and collecting quality artifacts, by educating the community, by collaborating with other institutions and organizations, and by interpreting and professionally presenting our local history. By fulfilling our mission, we unify the Stephenson County community through pride in its rich and historical traditions.

Museum Open HoursThe Historical Society Museum and Gift Shop are open Wednesday thru Sunday, from noon to four. Admission is free for members of the Historical Society or $4 for non-member adults and $2 for non-member children 6-12 years old. With groups of ten or more, you can schedule a group tour if you call at least two weeks ahead. Group tours are not restricted to regular open hours and can be scheduled for days or evenings, during the week or on weekends - whatever works for you. A "group" is any gathering of people -- a school class, scout troop, Bible study group, bridge club or even a casual gathering of friends. Group Tours are available for both children and adults, and special rates are available. Group Tours can be arranged to highlight a specific topic or theme for your group. The Stephenson County Historical Society is located at 1440 S. Carroll Avenue in Freeport. Freeport is in northwest Illinois, 100 miles from Chicago, 60 miles from Dubuque, Iowa and 325 miles from St. Louis, Missouri. Detailed Directions: From East (Chicago, Rockford): Take
Route 20 West to Business 20 (Galena Avenue) towards Freeport.
At the first stoplight, Galena Avenue veers to the right and the
road ahead becomes South Street. Go
straight through the light, onto South Street.
Continue on South Street. Look
to your right for Carroll Avenue. It
is in a residential area and not very well marked (if you hit any grocery
stores you've gone too far.) Turn
right on Carroll for four blocks, the museum will be on your left.
From West (Galena, Dubuque, IA): Take 20 East to Business 20 (Galena Avenue) towards Freeport.
Follow Galena Avenue through the downtown district.
At the Carroll Avenue stoplight, turn right.
Carroll Avenue makes an S-curve at Empire Street.
Go left on Empire, and then make an immediate right to pick up
Carroll Avenue again. Go two
blocks, the museum will be on your right. From North (Monroe, WI): Take 26 south into Freeport. At the Galena Avenue light go left. Follow Galena Avenue through the downtown district. At the Carroll Avenue stoplight, turn right. Carroll Avenue makes an S-curve at Empire Street. Go left on Empire, and then make an immediate right to pick up Carroll Avenue again. Go two blocks, the museum will be on your right. From South (Forreston): Take 26 north into Freeport. At the South Street light go right. Continuing on South Street, pass the Walnut Street stoplight Carroll Avenue will be the fourth street on your left. It is in a residential area and not very well marked. Turn left on Carroll for four blocks, the museum will be on your left. |
